What is HKSI Exam
Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI) conducts a licensing examination for Securities and Future Intermediaries. It makes the student eligible for a license with Securities and Future Commission(SFC) for any regulatory activity.
HKSI exam is practical and is based of global market. It is meant for those aspirants who want to make their career in security and Investment industry in Hong Kong.
The Securities and Future Ordinance provides for the implementation of the single licensing regime with 10 types of Regulated Activity(RA). An aspirant needs to get only one license or registration to carry on a particular RA. The LE is certified by Securities and Future Commission (SFC).
For HKSI exam purpose, all LE aspirants have three years to complete their combination of examination papers.
The list of LE needed to attempt for a particular RA is as under:
LE papers 7 and 8
- For RA type 1 Dealing in securities.
- For RA type 4 Advising on securities.
- For RA type 8 Securities Margin Financing.
LE papers 7 and 9
- For RA type 2 Dealing in futures contracts.
- For RA type 5 Advising on futures contracts.
LE papers 7 and 11
- For RA type 6 Advising on corporate finance.
LE papers 7 and 12
- For RA type 9 Asset management.
LE papers 7 and 10
- For RA type 10 Providing credit rating services.

Syllabus of Examination:
It comprises of 14 papers with two modes of examination. One is computer based examination (CBE) and other is paper based examination (PBE). The language of examination are both English and Chinese.
Six papers come under regulatory category:
- Paper 1.Fundamentals of Securities and Futures Regulation
- Paper 2.Regulation of Securities
- Paper 3.Regulation of Derivatives
- Paper 4.Regulation of Credit Rating Services
- Paper 5.Regulation of Corporate Finance
- Paper 6.Regulation of asset management
Six papers come under Practical category:
- Paper 7.Financial Market
- Paper 8.Securities
- Paper 9.Derivatives
- Paper 10.Credit Rating Services
- Paper 11.Corporate Finance
- Paper 12.Asset Management
Two papers come under sponsors category:
- Paper 15.Special examination on ethics, legal and regulatory requirements governing the conduct of IPO transactions. It provides SFC’s eligibility criteria for a principal.
- Paper 16.Special examination for SFC’s eligibility criteria for type 6 representatives or relevant individuals for sponsor work.
LE papers are conducted in general on monthly basis except for paper 4,10 and 15. Paper 4 and 10 are conducted on a quarterly basis. While paper 15 is conducted on bimonthly basis.
Upon completion of 3 year examinations, aspirants are awarded with HSKI certificates. The certificate holders are eligible to apply for their respective profiles as per their LEs in the fields of investment and securities.
