How to Properly Store Breast Milk

Breastfeeding provides vital nutrients for your baby’s growth and development. It is recommended to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of your baby’s life. However, there may be times when you need to express and store breast milk for future use.

When you are ready to use stored breast milk, it is important to thaw it properly to maintain its nutrient content. Thaw breast milk in the refrigerator overnight or place it in a bowl of warm water to thaw more quickly. Never microwave breast milk, as it can create hot spots that can burn your baby’s mouth.

Shake the container gently to mix the milk layers before feeding your baby. Check the temperature of the milk by placing a few drops on your wrist to ensure it is not too hot. Use thawed breast milk within 24 hours and do not refreeze it once it has been thawed.

By following these guidelines on how to preserve breast milk, you can ensure that your baby receives the best possible nutrition. Breastfeeding is a special bond between a mother and her child, and preserving breast milk allows you to provide your baby with the benefits of breast milk even when you are apart. Remember to practice good hygiene and follow safe storage practices to keep your breast milk fresh and safe for your little one.
